PHRASAL VERBS  INTRODUCTION
Phrasal verbs have two parts: a verb (e.g.: put, take, get, give, go, etc) and one or sometimes two "small words" (e.g.: on, up, out, in, etc) which go with the verb
Compare:
Normal Verbs:

Take       I took an aspirin because I had a terrible headache.
Break     He broke his arm during the game.
Catch      She managed to catch the last train.

Phrasal Verbs

Take off             Take off your coat! It's too hot here.
Break up            Jenny broke up with her boyfriend yesterday.
Catch up with     You go ahead - I'll catch up with you later.

The small words in phrasal verbs are important, because they completely change the meaning. For example:
 Get up = get out of bed
 Get away = escape
 Get on with someone = like being with them



PHRASAL VERBS: LISTA
  1. Ask out:    Invitar a salir. Ask someone to go on a date.
  2. Back up: Apoyar. The rest of the team backed her up when she told Management about her plans. También puede significar «dar marcha atrás» o «hacer una copia de seguridad».
  3. Bring up: mencionar algo. Don’t bring up the budget during the meeting, please.
  4. Call back: return a telephone call.
  5. Call off: Cancel.
  6. Call up: make a telephone call.
  7. Carry out: llevar a cabo. The company is carrying out a plan to increase salaries by 20% next year.
  8. Carry  on: continue doing. Seguir
  9. Come across: encontrarse a alguien por casualidad. I went to the park and came across your brother – he is looking so grown up now!
  10. Come up with: ocurrirse (una idea, solución…). Remember our IT problem? Well, Carlos has come up with a great solution!
  11. *Come into: enter. Figurative (heredar) mone:acquire, inherit.
  12. Do over: do again.
  13. Drop off: dejar a alguien en un sitio. Marcos is dropping me off at the airport today.
  14. Find out:  discover information.  Averiguar. María got promoted when they found out she has excellent business skills.
  15. *Get along:  Have a good relationship with. Llevarse bien. Do you get along with your English teacher? I think she’s really cool.
  16. *Get back to: responder más tarde. Let me check out some numbers and I will get back to you with an answer this afternoon.
  17. *Get back from: return to a trip.
  18. *Get over: recover from… Superar. He has gotten over his breakup quite well, don’t you think?
  19. *Get in: enter a car, a taxi.
  20. *Get out of: Leave acar, a taxi.
  21. *Get off: Leave a bus, an airplane, a train, a subway a bicycle.
  22. *Get on: Enter a bus, an airplane, a train, a subway, a bicycle.  
  23. Give up: Quit doing something or quit trying. Dejar un hábito. I gave up smoking last May. También puede significar «rendirse».
  24. *Grow up: become an adult.
  25. Go out: Salir. Leave.
  26. Hand in: give homework, test paper.
  27. Hurry up: darse prisa. Hurry up or we will never make it in time!
  28. *Look out (for): Be careful. Estar atento. Tener cuidado de..
  29. Look up: look for information in a reference book.
  30. Look after: cuidar de alguien. I’m looking after the children while my sister is at work.
  31. Look for: buscar. Search.
  32. Make up: recuperar. Making up for lost time. Otros posibles significados: hacer las paces, maquillarse, inventar…
  33. Pick up: recoger. Can you pick me up at the train station? También puede significar «aprender por casualidad»: I picked up some French while I was living in Paris.
  34. Point out: señalar. Thanks for pointing this out, John -otherwise we could have made a big mistake.
  35. Put down: stop holding o carrying (deja de sostener o llevar)
  36. Put on: ponerse. She put on a pretty dress to wear to the party.           Put the lights on, will you? It's getting dark.(prender,encender).
  37. Put up: colgar. He put up a picture for visitors to see. Subir, We've been forced to put up our prices to cover the costs of raw materials.
  38. Set up: fundar, establecer. I have always wanted to set up my own freelance business.
  39. Settle down: establecerse. Asentarse I wanted to get married, but he wasn't ready to settle down. I travel too much for my job to settle down and raise a family.
  40. Set off: irse para, salir (de viaje)           We'll have to set off very early to avoid the rush-hour traffic.
  41. Turn on/off: encender/apagar. Can you turn the lighs off when you leave, please?
  42. Turn out: ocurrir de manera diferente a lo esperado. As it turns out, John didn’t get the job in Advertising -he is going to Australia for a gap year instead.
  43. Turn up: llegar o aparecer. Mike hasn’t turned up yet. Do any of you know where is he?
The verbs with an asterisk (*) are nonseparable. The others are separable.



PRACTICE

A - The following sentences have phrasal verbs. Can you guess what they mean? Match them with their meanings in the box. Use a dictionary if necessary.
